Build a Workout Routine That Works for YOU

Consistency is often hailed as the secret to achieving your fitness goals, but have you considered that prioritizing frequency may be an even more effective strategy for establishing a sustainable workout routine?

Here's the insight: When you impose strict schedules like "I will work out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday," unexpected events can disrupt your plans. Missing a workout can lead to feelings of failure, which can be demotivating.

Instead, try setting a flexible goal to exercise X times per week. This approach allows you to adapt your workouts around life's unpredictability. For instance, you might work out on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday one week, and then shift to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday the next. The focus should be on consistent effort rather than striving for perfection. As James Clear notes in Atomic Habits, "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you want to become." By regularly showing up for yourself, you reinforce your identity as someone who prioritizes fitness.

Additionally, remember that workouts don’t need to be lengthy or confined to a gym. If time is tight, a quick 10-20 minute session at home can still help you maintain your routine. Here’s a simple workout plan for those busy days:

15-Minute At-Home Circuit:

  • 10 bodyweight squats

  • 10 elevated push-ups

  • 25 hip bridges

  • 20-second plank

  • Repeat for 3-4 rounds

Your fitness journey should be tailored specifically to you, rather than following a generic program. When I meet with new gym members, my first question is: How many days per week can you realistically commit to? From there, we create a personalized plan that fits seamlessly into their lifestyle.

Remember, trying to force a routine that doesn’t resonate with you is rarely successful. Instead of seeking perfection, focus on progress. Show up, get moving, and celebrate every achievement—no matter how small. Each step forward builds momentum, making it easier to continue on your path to fitness.

Wishing you all the best on your health and fitness journey,
